Council to Examine Penny III Budget Today

By Carl Wagenfohr

CLEARWATER - The Clearwater City Council will meet in a special worksession today, Thursday, at 1:30 pm to discuss staff-recommended changes to the list of projects that would be funded by Penny for Pinellas III, the countywide 1-percent infrastructure sales tax that was extended for third decade by voters in 2007.

Following on from the Council's January 15th Penny III worksession, the funding additions include:

  • Downtown boat slips - $8.25-million
  • Downtown intermodal facility - $8-million
  • Police Vehicles - $1.8-million
  • Fire Engines - $1.97-million

The elimination or reduction in funding for several projects is also being recommended, including:

  • Lakeview, Countryside and Clearwater Beach Fire Station renovations reduced by a total of $1.35-million
  • Downtown streetscaping reduced by $4.5-million to $8-million
  • New City Hall and Parking Garage reduced by $18-million to $7-million
  • Municipal Beach Parking Garage reduced by $4-million to $8.5-million
  • Downtown Parking Garage eliminated, saving $6.25-million
  • Countryside Family Aquatics Center, eliminated during the January 15th worksession, remains unfunded

Because today's meeting is a worksession, not a public hearing, public comment will not be heard. Any amendments to Clearwater's Penny for Pinellas project list will require Council approval at a future public hearing; the date of that meeting has not been set.
