Sunwatch Condominium residents (from left) Susie Thatcher, Jody Keck, Sharon Givens, Betty Furniss, Anita Johnson and Joyce Smith are ready for the upcoming "Pink Power Walk" on Clearwater Beach. The "Cruzin' Cooler" the ladies are sitting on will be given away in an opportunity drawing following the walk.

ISLAND ESTATES - A group of ladies from Sunwatch Condominium had the distinction of being the first to register for the third annual "Pink Power Walk" on Clearwater Beach. The event on April 18 is a benefit for the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for cancers affecting women and stopping domestic violence. Organizer Betty Furniss and her Mary Kay team members are currently registering other participants and seeking sponsors for the walk.

Sponsors can participate in several ways, according to Furniss. They may help with a monetary donation or provide an item or gift certificate for the silent auction which will follow the walk. Businesses supporting the effort may promote their services by providing a discount coupon, menu or business card that will go into the goody bags given to all attendees.

"Pink Power" T-shirts, visors and ball caps are available for purchase as are chances to win a "Cruzin' Cooler" & Trailer. All proceeds from sales and registration fees will go to the Foundation. Furniss advises that more than 97 percent of each donation dollar is used to support cancer research and programs to prevent violence. Less than three percent goes to administrative expenses, she said.

Registration fee for the walk is $13 per person in advance, $15 at the event. Kids under 12 are free. Participants will meet at Tommy Duff's Irish Aviation Pub at 10 a.m. and walk to the beach and back, a distance of about two miles. Following the walk, Tommy Duff's will present the first annual "D - Cup" Race, an event pitting three "Cruzin' Coolers" against each other in the parking lot. You can sponsor your own team for $100. Race proceeds also go to the Mary Kay Ash Foundation.

To register for the walk or make a donation, call Betty Furniss at 447-4646. Persons interested in participating in the "D - Cup" Race may arrange sponsorships by calling either Furniss at the number above or Tommy Duff at 449-1366.
