Lighthouse Tours at State Park Preserve Announced

-Anclote Key to host a day of light house tours-

DUNEDIN – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, The Florida Park Service and the Friends of Anclote Key invite the public to view Anclote Key’s historic lighthouse. On Saturday April 25th, the Friends of Anclote Key will be on hand for the annual Open House at Anclote Key from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The lighthouse compound will be open to visitors and tours of the lighthouse will be given as well. Park Ranger Chris Berner will be on site for all questions regarding the island and lighthouse along with members of the Friends of Anclote Key. Please remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen with you to the island!

Admission to the preserve is free but access to Anclote Key is by boat only or via three ferries: Sunline Cruises at (727) 944-4468, Island Time at (727) 447-0969 or Spongearama at (727) 943-2164 or. Visitors wishing to climb the lighthouse must wear closed toe shoes and be able to climb 101 steps in a hot enclosed space.

The 19th century lighthouse was preserved for future generations and was re-lit in 2001. It played a vital role in the Tarpon Springs sponging industry. For more information visit www.flordastateparks.org or www.anclotecso.com
