Morton Plant Mease Hosts Seminar As Part of Stroke Awarness Month

Learn How to Prevent a Stroke and Find Out if you Are at Risk

CLEARWATER — May is Stroke Awareness Month and physicians at Morton Plant Mease Heath Care are reaching out to the community by educating them on stroke prevention and risk factors associated with stroke.  On May 6, stroke specialist Dr. Ajay Arora, neuro-interventionalist Dr. Eric Lopez del Valle and vascular surgeon Dr. John Ofenloch will give a free informational session on stroke.  The specialists will discuss prevention, recognizing symptoms, treatment, recovery and the latest research on stroke.

Participants will be given a risk factor assessment form to determine their risk of having a stroke.  They will have an opportunity to meet with a nurse specializing in stroke to review the information and answer questions and offer referrals.

The session will be held on May 6, at 10 a.m. in the Ptak Orthopaedic and Neuroscience Pavilion, 430 Morton Plant Street, Clearwater. To register, call (727) 462-7500, or for more information call (727) 734-6867.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death in America and the number one cause of adult disability.  The good news is that approximately 80% of strokes are preventable, according to the National Stroke Association.  To help remember the symptoms and better recognize a person having a stroke, the National Stroke Association has come up with a simple acronym, FAST.

F - Face The face droop on one side when the person smiles
A - Arm After raising both arms, one of the arms drift downwards
S - Speech  Speech slurred or strange
T - Time  If any or all of the above are observed, call 9-1-1, noting the time at onset of symptoms
