Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

We who live near the water have strong motivation to be sure our children can swim well, even at an early age. Make it fun for your children to improve their swimming skills this summer by signing them up for the swim team at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center.

It's not an ordeal for either you or them.  Swim teams are set up with a two-week session of practice, then a "meet" with similar teams throughout the city.  There is even a team for children six and under.  There is no age limit.  All a child must be able to do to qualify is to swim across the pool on their own.  Then they meet for two weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., for practice and, on the second Thursday, the team participates in competition with others in their age groups.

In the above six age group, there is no age limit.  There is also no limit on the number of children on the team as more coaches can be brought in if the number is larger than a team size.

Furthermore, children can sign up for one session, or five sessions and participate fully in the program. This starts on June 8. Cost is only $15 a session for those with a Play Pass, $20 for children with a recreation card and $25 for non-residents.

Just call the pool at 462-6020 for more information or to register your children.  Just think!  A whole two weeks with an excuse to spend 45 minutes a day in the shade, beside or in the water, at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center pool.
