Heart of Largo Children's Art Show SlatedLARGO - Attention Largo parents, do your kids eat smart and play hard? -63.2% of Pinellas County residents are overweight or obese which can lead to heart disease, type II diabetes, cancer and even death. The Largo community including the Pinellas County Health Department, City of Largo, Largo Recreation, Parks, & Arts, Pinellas County Schools, R' Club, and the YMCA of the Suncoast have come together to increase public awareness of childhood obesity. In 2008, The Heart of Largo coalition asked Largo students how do you eat smart and play hard. School children in grades 1-3 participated in a drawing contest showing a healthy message and 13 winners were chosen to be printed in a calendar. The first place winner is Nadya, a third grader from Oakhurst Elementary. All 13 winners will be displayed in the gallery at the Largo Public Library for the month of June, 2009. The Largo Public Library is located at 120 Central Park Drive, please check out their website at largopubliclibrary.org for hours of operation. The mission of Heart of Largo is to achieve and maintain healthy weights among early elementary school children through multi-level, community-driven, environmental change. The focus will be on increased knowledge, awareness and opportunities through healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle. Heart of Largo will reach the community through participation in community events, programs that support a healthy lifestyle, the Healthy Choices Restaurant Program, community partnerships, and school cafeterias.
