GLEANINGS FROM THE SCRIPTURES

THE RAINBOW: A REVELATION OF GOD

By Keith L. Estes

The rainbow, according to Scripture, is God's promise that there will never again be a flood to destroy the whole Earth. All of us are fascinated when we observe a rainbow. Children and adults alike are held in awe when they see the cloud with the rainbow in it. There were no rainbows to see before the flood, as it hadn't rained upon the Earth, because God watered the Earth by a mist before Noah's day. (Genesis 2:6) Genesis 9: 11-14 reads:

And I will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set My Bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud

J. Rambsel, in his book His Name Is Jesus, states that the rainbow makes a complete circle that can be detected when viewed from above. This speaks of infinity because when God makes a covenant, He will never break His part of that promise. It is as though God is the wheel-within-the-wheel of the rainbow, from which all light radiates. The spectrum of the rainbow is a prophetic announcement of the Good News (Gospel). Sir Isaac Newton, who is considered to be one of the greatest geniuses of all time, used a spectrum in some of his scientific research. He found that from a source of white light, the spectrum gives wavelengths of seven shades of color. This is exactly what the rainbow does. God is the source of all light that radiates from His covenant through the spectrum of His heavenly rainbow. The colors are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. These shades of color give us a wonderful, prophetic picture of the Good News and the love of God for all His creation that is proclaimed throughout the world. The rainbow actually brings "good news or good tidings."

Each color of the rainbow has an eternal meaning:

  1. Blue depicts heaven, infinity, Son of God; Hebrews 1:1-2 says, "God Who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, Whom He has appointed heir of all things, by Whom also He made the worlds."
  2. Red is for scarlet, blood, redemption. Ephesians 1:6-7 says, "To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved. In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace."
  3. Orange means fruit, fruit of atonement, fruit of the Spirit, and trees of righteousness. Psalm 1:3 says, "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper."
  4. Indigo stands for the dark blue dye from plants; it was one of the dyes used for the skins for the Tabernacle covering. This is yet another picture of the humanity of Jesus; the dyed rams' skin was the outer visable covering of the dwelling place of God. First Timothy 3:16 states, "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."
  5. Green depicts resurrection, newness of life, growth. The storm that brings the rain also brings with it newness of life for the soil and plants. Each storm is accompanied by lightning, thunder, and a rainbow-yet another signature of God in the heavens. Rev. 21: 5 says, "And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true an faithful."
  6. Gold is for deity, purity, and perfection. Gold speaks of the perfect Son of God from heaven 2 Cor. 5:21 states; "For He hath made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him."
  7. Violet, or bluish purple, is royalty kingship, love, John 3:16 states, "For God so loved the world, that He have His only begotten Son, that whosover believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
