Enter for a Chance to Win Free CMA Prizes!

CLEARWATER - Among dolphins, sea turtles, river otters and more, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is also home to Cownose stingrays. CMA has two males and one female stingray-and they all need names! Through the "Name Our Rays" contest, one winner (who chooses all three names) will be chosen by CMA staff.

The winner will get to choose one of the following packages:

  • Family of Four Membership to CMA, 1 Dolphin Encounter, 4 lower bowl tickets to the Tampa Rays vs. New York Yankees game on Saturday, October 3 OR
  • $200 certificate to the CMA gift shop

The cost to enter the contest is $10 and entries may be submitted online (through www.SeeWinter.com) or in person at CMA. There is no age limit to enter the contest, which will run through Thursday, September 24. The winner will be announced Friday, September 25.

Here are some interesting facts about Cownose rays:

  • They have a square, indented snout that resembles a cow's nose and they don't have any bones or teeth!
  • They can have a wingspan of up to three-feet long and can weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • They swim in large schools and flap their "wings" like a bird through the water. As they swim, the tips of the fins break the surface and can look like shark fins.
  • Stingrays at CMA have had their "barbs" removed. They use them as defensive weapons to protect themselves and normally swim away when approached by divers or other animals.
