Opinion Poll Results - Outsourcing Clearwater's PolicingCLEARWATER - In the September 24, 2009, edition of the Gazette we published a story about the Clearwater City Council's lack of interest in evaluating a proposal from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to provide law enforcement services in the city. Jim Coats, the Pinellas County Sheriff, claimed that, without reducing the service level, he could save Clearwater at least $10-million annually by taking over the city's policing, largely by eliminating redundancies between the Sheriff's Office and the Clearwater Police Department. In the Gazette's online edition last week, we conducted an opinion poll, asking, "Should the Clearwater City Council solicit a proposal from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office for police services, and at a public meeting decide whether to accept or reject the proposal?"
