12/7, Monday, 7:30 pm - Clearwater Audubon Monthly Meeting. Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: 727-462-6024. Guest Speakers: Melanie Higgins and Lauren Deaner. Program title: Quest Ecology Monitoring Bird Migration. Melanie Higgins, Public Involvement Specialist, and Lauren Deaner, Ecologist, will present methods and results of a study of the use of restored habitat by neo-tropical migratory songbirds. The study is being performed in partnership with Hillsborough County Department of Natural Resources at Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. They are excited about presenting their "award winning" project to Clearwater Audubon. They recently won an award from the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission for "Outstanding Contribution to the Community" Environmental Projects.
12/5, Saturday, 8 a.m. - Moccasin Lake Nature Park Bird Watching Walk. Meet at Moccasin Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: Madeleine Bohrer 727-518-6241. Meet in the parking lot. Join Clearwater Audubon Society in this wonderful Clearwater park to look for an incredible variety of songbirds, water birds, and raptors in this unique oak hammock. 'Tis the season for migration so anything is possible! This is an easy 3/4 mile trail and ideal for beginning and advanced birders alike. There are two large ponds, a stream, and a nature center which houses turtles and injured birds. Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them! 3-12 years: $2. 13 years and up: $3.
12/12, Saturday, 8 a.m. - Birdwalk at Brooker Creek Preserve. Meet at the preserve in the Education Center parking lot. Contact: Ken Rowe 727-781-0745. If you have ever visited Brooker Creek Preserve you know what a special place it is. Not only can you see migratory and resident songbirds and raptors but many other kinds of creatures and plants as well. There are 3 miles of boardwalks and some sand trails so be prepared to take a good walk. Be sure to bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them!
