Independence Initiative Proceeds with Sand Key OnlyClearwater Beach, Island Estates Fall Short of Financial GoalCLEARWATER -November 30th was the deadline to raise $90,000 for the economic feasibility study that is needed for residents to have factual information on which to make the decision as to whether or not they want to continue exploring the option of incorporating a new city. Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and Sand Key participated in this fund raising campaign. Donations were requested in the amount of $155.00 from concerned citizens on each island. The results are as follows:
Each island was responsible to contribute its proportionate share of $30,000 in order to participate in, and, receive the findings of the economic feasibility study. In addition, the fundraising results would help gauge the level of interest of residents from that island. Based on the amounts raised, it is apparent that Sand Key not only met the $30,000 threshold, but exceeded it. The other two islands -- Clearwater Beach and Island Estates - did not reach their goals and will no longer participate in the process. Uncashed checks received from donors on Island Estates and Clearwater Beach are being returned. This month, volunteers from Sand Key will reconvene with the economic feasibility team experts to evaluate the options available in moving forward with the process to investigate self-governance for Sand Key only. III will report back on those options to Sand Key donors in January, 2010. Unless otherwise advised, the uncashed checks from Sand Key donors will continue to be held by III until a future course of action is agreed upon by Sand Key donors in January 2010. More information is available on III's website, 3unitedislands.com.
