Clearwater Audubon Society Upcoming Events

1/4, Monday, 7:30 p.m. - Clearwater Audubon Monthly Meeting, Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: 727-462-6024. Join Clearwater Audubon Society for its monthly meeting to hear Charles Lee, a long time officer with Audubon of Florida, share his wealth of knowledge about the history of the Audubon Society in our state. This should be quite an interesting evening. Go at 7:00 to mix and mingle and share stories with other nature- and bird-lovers.

1/2, Saturday, 8 a.m. - Moccasin Lake Nature Park Bird Watching Walk. Meet at Moccasin Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: Lynn Sumerson 596-8822. Join Clearwater Audubon Society in this wonderful Clearwater park to look for an incredible variety of songbirds, water birds, and raptors in this unique oak hammock. 'Tis the season for migration so anything is possible! This is an easy 3/4 mile trail and ideal for beginning and advanced birders alike. There are two large ponds, a stream, and a nature center which houses turtles and injured birds. Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them - 3-12 years: $2, 13 years and up: $3

1/9, Saturday, 8 a.m. - Fort de Soto County Park Birdwalk. Contact: John Hood 727-461-4762. Meet at the ranger's station under the big flag when you enter the park.
Join Clearwater Audubon Society on a great birdwatching trip to Fort de Soto. Did you know that this huge park has a tremendous variety of migratory songbirds, raptors, water and shore birds? It is full of natural beauty and surprises. This includes birding the causeway and shoreline drive in addition to walking about 2 miles on Tampa Bay's north shore. Bring your binoculars!

1/15 to 1/17, Friday to Sunday - Multi-day trip to Stormwater Treatment Area 5, Lake Okeechobee, and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Contact: Paul Trunk 727-447-4785. This is a thrilling weekend trip to the southeast corner of Lake Okeechobee to a network of lakes that provides a beautiful habitat to thousands of birds including Peregrine Falcons, Snail Kites, White Pelicans, Purple Gallinules and more. From here travel to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, a magical cypress forest home to many types of songbirds, wading birds, owls, and raptors. Please call for more information and prices.

1/19, Tuesday, 8 a.m. - Big Birds for Beginners at Bonner Park, 11901 146th St., Largo. Contact: Lynn Sumerson 727-596-8822. Meet in the parking lot for a short lecture then take a nice, relaxing walk under the lovely canopy of oaks and then onto the short boardwalk which leads to a large, covered dock with a lovely view of the intracoastal waterway. Bring your armchairs and binoculars and have some birding fun!

1/23, Saturday, 10 a.m. - Big Birds for Beginners at Honeymoon Island
Meet at the Nature Center. Contact: Contact: Lynn Sumerson 727-596-8822. Attend for a short lecture on how to identify shore and water birds. Then, everyone will survey the Honeymoon Island shoreline and Dunedin Causeway. There will be about three miles of sand trails and some driving. This is a beautiful place to learn birdwatching! Cost: $4 per car to enter the park.

1/30, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Clearwater Audubon's 50th Birthday Celebration, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 249 Windward Passage, Clearwater. Attend for an evening of celebratory fun to honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of Clearwater Audubon Society! There will be a wine and cheese social hour, a dolphin show and a catered buffet dinner as well as several other activities.
