Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Presents A Sumi-e Art ExhibitSARASOTA - Sumi-e artists from Florida's Suncoast will exhibit their paintings at the Sumi-e Society Exhibition to be held in the historic Selby house at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens January 30 through March 28, 2010. The exhibition will include excellent examples of various Oriental Brush Painting "schools". Members have studied Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, as well as contemporary styles. Sumi-e is an intellectual and spiritual, as well as an artistic pursuit. It is closely related to the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy. The brush strokes used to create a painting are based on the strokes used to produce the beautiful characters of Chinese writing. The painter's goal is to use a few free-flowing, confident strokes to produce the essence of the landscape, flower, tree, or scene, not an exact copy. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a respected center for research and education, as well as a famous orchid showplace. The Gardens is located at 811 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota and is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Christmas day.
