Backwater's Announces 5th Annual Sand Key Chili Cook-Off Winners
(Left to right) Alex Zak won 2nd place, Bill Runyan won 1st place, and Bill Tannock won 3rd. CLEARWATER - There was no question about the winner of Backwater's 5th Annual Chili Cook-off. Bill Runyan (center above), of Largo, handily won the bragging rights to first place. In second was Alex Zak (left above), resident of Sand Key. After that, things got a little dramatic. There was a third place tie among three chili's. The tie was eventually won by Bill Tannock (right above). After the rules the tension built, as they were followed by the tallying of all five judges' forms for taste points - again a tie! After calling the judges back to the tasting table, 3rd place was narrowly chosen, leaving contestants Mike Ford and Jerri Horn in 4th. The standing room only crowd also got to meet celebrity chef Johnny Ciao, who has served as personal chef to the stars from "Willy Nelson, to Marlon Brando".
