ACT Research Shows Challenging Coursework Key to Success

IOWA CITY, IOWA- Soon both junior high and high school students will select classes for the next school year. ACT offers valuable information to students and their parents to help them make decisions as they prepare for the future.

Students should take the most challenging courses in school. Doing so will ensure they're prepared for both college and careers.

A rigorous college-preparatory curriculum is the best choice for students - even if college isn't on their radar right now. The academic skills necessary for success in the workplace are the same skills necessary for success in college.

ACT recommends students take the following specific course sequences:

  • Four years of English
  • At least three years of Mathematics, including rigorous courses in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
  • Three years of Science including rigorous courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • Three years of Social Studies
