
Scuba Olympics at the Long CenterCLEARWATER - The second annual Scuba Olympics will be Saturday, March 27, at the Long Center pool, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants will arrive at 9:00 a.m., with the Olympics and Opening Processions starting at 10:00 a.m. Proceeds from the event will go to the Clearwater Adaptive Swim Team, which competes in the Special Olympics. Olympic gold medalist swimmer Garrett Weber-Gale, Olympic swimmer Matt Lowe, and other members of the Clearwater Adaptive Swim Team will attend. Events to test the skills of the divers include an underwater bike race, three-legged diver race, diver tow relay, and balloon lift. For the balloon lift, divers blow up balloons and place them in a bag to lift 30 pounds of weight from the bottom of the pool. Medals will be awarded for first, second, and third place. The events include raffles of scuba gear. All participants receive event t-shirts. The Professional Association of Dive Shop Operators (P.A.D.O.) is a group of dive shops who work together to promote the love of scuba diving. Participating scuba shops are: Aquatic Obsessions, Jim's Dive Shop, Ocean Sports, Narcosis Scuba, and Scuba West. The Long Center is located at 1501 North Belcher Road in Clearwater.
