Commercial whalingDear Editor, You know it's a bad day for the whales when the U.S. delegation to the International Whaling Commission is supporting a proposal to overturn the ban on commercial whaling. I was appalled to when I read this, how can our government support commercial whaling in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary? Is there some reason that we feel compelled to return to the barbaric practices that decimated global whale populations in the 20th century? The vast majority of Americans oppose whale hunting. Why should we lower our own standards to legitimize whale slaughter by Japan, Iceland and Norway? Ending Japan's hunt of whales in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary should be a priority for the Obama Administration. There is nothing sustainable about slaughtering species we are trying to preserve for future generations. I expect leadership from the Obama administration and that means the U.S. should oppose any proposal to restart commercial whaling as a legitimate enterprise in the 21st century.
Sincerely,
