Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

"Dum, di, dum, di, dum dum," Jaws, the movie, will be playing on Clearwater Beach next Tuesday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. It's playing at the Clearwater Beach Library and you're invited, free of charge. Please note, yours truly has been swimming, daytime and night, spring, summer, and fall, in the Gulf of Mexico, and never had even a hint of a shark encounter. Besides, the really big ones like they have in the movie are only found in the ocean, not the Gulf. In fact, if I recall correctly, in the movie they used an outsized mechanical one. Who ever heard of a performing shark? They're just not as friendly as dolphins.

While you are there you might want to sign up your youngsters for the summer Swim Team program, right there at the Recreation Center desk. No youngster should wander around on Clearwater Beach without, not only knowing how to swim, but also being a good swimmer as they're taught to be in the swim competition of the Clearwater Recreation program.

Then, on June 2nd, at 1:00 p.m., you might want to join the writer's support group. Started in October of 2008, and planned for six weeks, the group has continued meeting every first and third Wednesday. In that time, two of the members have created books of memories and gotten them published via a book publishing Internet program. Another member has an article ready for publication in a magazine, and Vicki Jackson has begun writing for the Clearwater Gazette, as you can see by her by-lines. New members who wish to get some help and encouragement with their writing are always welcome.

Starting June 15th, the Library will have a craft program for children on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. The first session will be shell crafts. You'll want to add it to your summer plans.
