
Clearwater Civitans Present Police Award

On Tuesday morning, May 25, at 8:00 a.m. Clearwater Civitans gathered in Police Chief "Tony" Holloway's Conference Room at the Clearwater Police Headquarters to honor Sgt. Juan Torres. He received the Civitan Club's annual Excellent Performance of Police Duties and Service to the Community Award. Sgt. Torres was the 21st recipient of the award. The award is presented during the Clearwater Civitan Club's annual Law Week Celebration. The award is presented to a member of the Clearwater Police Department, selected by his peers and supervisors. Clearwater Civitan Club President, Richard Fuller, opened the special meeting and greeted the dozen members of the Clearwater Police Department present. He then introduced Chief Holloway and Sgt. Juan Torres and his family. He then explained the Civitan Law Week Program and turned the floor over to Chief Holloway. Chief Holloway read a citation outlining Sgt. Torres duties and volunteer efforts in the community. Sgt. Torres is currently responsible for the oversight of the department's AmeriCorps Clearwater program and a high school internship program. Both of these programs expose young individuals to law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and the operations of the Clearwater Police Department. The manner in which Sgt. Torres has implemented these programs has demonstrated a clear commitment to the development of youth in our community. Sgt. Torres also serves on the Hispanic Leadership Council and supervises the Department's Hispanic Outreach Program. Sgt. Torres has developed partnerships and taken advantage of opportunities to make a difference in the community. He participates in Paint Your Heart Out; to assist low income families maintain their homes. He participates with the Safe Kids Coalition; to promote bicycle safety, child restraint use, and home and pool safety. Sgt. Torres' leadership in the Police Department and his efforts at community betterment demonstrated his outstanding qualifications to receive this award for Excellent Performance of Police Duty and Service to the community. Civitan Club President, Richard Fuller, presented the plaque and a check for $150 to Sgt. Torres. Sgt. Torres then thanked his fellow officers for the honor and he thanked the Clearwater Civitan Club for their recognition.
