Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

This week, the Clearwater Beach Library and Pool, plus other libraries and recreation centers, are back "in" the Clearwater City budget for 2010-2011. City officials have given a number of different reasons why this is so, none of which include actually listening to the group of people who went to City Hall recently to encourage them to keep these facilities open. That doesn't mean the e-mails and speeches at City Hall didn't help. It's simply sad that our elected officials are so reluctant to say, "We heard you! You're the boss." It seems we've gone from government "of the people, by the people, for the people" to, "Don't bother us with your wishes and viewpoints. We're the government. We know best!"

So, we're back to use it or lose it. Your summer days can be much enriched by both our library and pool. Browsing the books on the shelves, using the free computers, visiting with friends as you soak in the pool, or entertaining your young grandchildren or visitors at either place can make for a more relaxed summertime.

Did you know, you can sit in a chair or stand in one place and play tennis, go bowling or box on Wednesdays, using the Nintendo Wii games at the library? It's all the excitement and fun of competition without the energy required for the real thing.

See you there!
