Clearwater Civitan Club's Service and Philanthropy Rewarded

At the Civitan International Convention in Cancun, Mexico, over the Labor Day weekend, the excellent efforts of the Clearwater Civitan Club were recognized and rewarded.

The club received the third place International Award for their service to youth. This was the result of sponsoring a Little League Challenger Division team, and giving full support to the team at each practice and game. This included Civitans staffing the refreshment stand for three hours during each game from January through April, allowing the league parents to watch or help their children play ball. It also included getting members of the North Pinellas Junior Civitan Club to assist the players on the field.

At the end of the season, a Challenger Division Area Jamboree was held in Clearwater. The Clearwater Civitans staffed the refreshment stand for this event for nine hours on Saturday and five hours on Sunday. They prepared and served food to some nine hundred eager ballplayers, parents, and siblings.

The twenty-four member Clearwater Civitan Club was also judged to be the first runner up to the Battlefield Club of the Appalachian District of Civitan for the coveted Shropshire Award as the best club in Civitan. This award is presented for Overall Service to Youth, Overall Service to the Community, Overall Service to the Handicapped and Challenged, along with other criteria.

The Clearwater Civitan Club was also recognized for its philanthropy in arranging for donations in excess of $27,000 to the Civitan International Research Center, located in the Medical Center of the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Also at the convention, was the Orlando Civitan and a past Florida District Governor, Gay Aaron, was installed as the President of Civitan International for the 2010-2011 year.
