Rays Pitcher Steps Up to the Plate for the SPCA

Photos/text by SANDI FAHY

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Grant Balfour and his wife Angie are shown with the two dogs they adopted at SPCA Tampa Bay. ZZ, a pit bull mix, was adopted a year ago. Zeus, a boxer mix, became their pet a month ago. The Balfours were at the Largo shelter on September 18 for "Pitch In for Pets" day. Persons adopting pets that day received a complimentary photo with Balfour. Others attending with their pets were invited to have their photos taken with Balfour for a $5 donation to the shelter. Proceeds from the event, which was held to raise awareness about the importance of adopting pets from shelters as opposed to purchasing them from stores, will benefit the animals at SPCA Tampa Bay.

Rays fans Bob and Marylu Bennett of Clearwater meet Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Grant Balfour at the Pitch In for Pets day at SPCA Tampa Bay on September 18. The Bennetts brought their golden retriever mix named Georgia Peach to the event, which included adoption and boutique specials along with gift drawings for Rays baseball caps, game tickets and an autographed Grant Balfour baseball glove.
