Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

You won't want to miss October's "Movie On The Beach" at the Clearwater Beach Library. Last month it was Richard Gere. This month we get Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. Called "The Blind Side," the movie is the story of a homeless teen taken in by a wealthy family. Come find out how a situation like that turns out. It's based on a true story.

Bring your own popcorn on Tuesday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Clearwater Beach Library. Just think, someone else will figure out for you how to make the TV do its thing. I don't know about you, but it's always an adventure for me to find out if my TV wants to cooperate or if I've, once again, punched the wrong button in the wrong sequence to make it work. Joyce, our intrepid librarian, gets it right every time.

For those who like their recreation more active than admiring Sandra Bullocks' acting, Pilates will be back on Monday at 9:30 a.m., and Butts and Guts starts Wednesday, the 13th at 10:00 a.m. Of course they're at different times so you can do it all and still make it to the writers group at the library, which meets the first and third Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.

By the way, there have been some different and interesting shells on the beach lately, stirred from their nests by offshore storms and brought in by high tides. If you are curious about the names of the shells, check out the display at the Clearwater Beach Library, donated by the late Frances P. McKay, who owned the Shell Bank on Clearwater Beach. This display will let you quickly find the name of almost any shell you will find in this area. If not, there are books at the library to help.
