Long Center Hosts Table Tennis Tourney

CLEARWATER - The sound of ping pong balls bouncing off racquets and hitting the tables filled the air at the Long Center earlier this month. The annual Dr. Dan Table Tennis Tournament was under way once again. Trophies awaited the winners in seven divisions.

Ricardo Abril emerged the winner In Class A (over 1600 rating) competition. Runnersup were James Wang, second place; Jarslar Horak, third place; and Al Palumbo, fourth place. Arnav Mohanty took first place in Class B. Melvin Evans came in second. Finishing in third and fourth place, respectively, were Phil Gehres and Ed Curran..

The Class C division winner was Phil Pisarczyk. Others receiving recognition were Eugene Lisin, second place; Carolyn Adams, third place; and James Deshaies, fourth place.

Arsav Mohanty battled his way to first place, with Ray Robson taking second place among juniors under 17. Third place went to Joseph Leung. Izy Bar-Joseph was winner in the Juniors Under 14 division.

Richard Moreau and Ted Ostrowsky teamed up to take first place in Doubles Over 60 play. The duo of Acer LaAdams and Ed Curran came in second. The efforts of James Wang and Gar Bo Leung earned them first place in Open Doubles. Junior participants Jackie Leung and Joseph Leung also competed in Open Doubles and finished second.

Persons interested in competitive table tennis are invited to join the Sunrise Table Tennis Club, whose members play regularly at two locations in Clearwater--the Long Center, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon, and the Ross Norton Recreation Complex, Wednesdays, 6 to 9 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m.
